Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck

Liposuction is a tool that is very useful for removing areas of fat. There are areas that we feel can lose 10 pounds or whatever, especially in those localized areas. I think most patients in Singapore just really want to use liposuction to get rid of those stubborn fat that can't be removed from exercise or diet. Normally it is just to remove fat under the skin or what we call subcutaneous fat, not the visceral fat. I want to emphasize the thing that determine whether the liposuction procedure is nice is the quality of the skin. If the skin is loose and there is stretch mark, you take the fat away, the skin is going to hang and there is such a thing as overdoing it because if your surgeon do it wrong it will look abnormal. I would only suggest if you are serious about undergoing one of those fat reduction procedures, you should always consult with a certified liposuction surgeon in Singapore that has accreditation from Ministry of health or the cosmetic society board. Then he will analyze the areas that liposuction works, which normally great is the hips, the flanks, and sometimes the tummy.

This is how the surgery process looks like:

There is an alternative to liposuction

With tummy tuck we can do 2 things: all the extra skin from down near your hairline to the belly button, we get rid all of that. Then we take the upper portion of the abdomen and pull it down. It's amazing but that skin stretches down. You can imagine all of that loose skin goes away. The other thing that is more important after weight gain or pregnancy, the muscle weakened sometimes you do 1000 sit ups but the muscles never regain its tone. With tummy tuck after the procedure, your surgeon will put strong stitches in that put the muscles together, tighten in various directions depending on how loose they are and then you will end up with tight abdomen, and lesser body fat as well. Of course the other difference is the cost between liposuction and tummy tuck which typically if you are in Singapore, liposuction procedure is slightly more expensive.

When to use what?

So basically these 2 procedures are similar and patients often get confused which one to use. One patient came in and asked me to do liposuction because she wasn't happy with the appearance of her stomach, but as soon as I look at her I realized what she need was tummy tuck. The reason for this is the skin. If there are a lot of excess skin on the lower part of abdomen then tummy tuck needs to be performed in order to removed the excess skin especially for women after pregnancy or giving birth this procedure is fairly popular. Remember liposuction only removes fat. Some people say liposuction can tighten the skin but the amount of it varies and does not compare at all to the amount of fat and skin tightening you get by removing a large amount of skin surgically.

I can only say that after doing this liposuction or tummy tuck. You have to change your lifestyle. A lean belly leads to a healthier longer life, when you can maintain your waist size after the surgery you can really improve your overall health, and organs.
